Explore more in 2010 with new REI Adventurous trips in Ecuador, Arizona, France and beyond! Not only this, a new family adventure to Washington’s San Juan Islands is also waiting for you. A place that's been inspiring, educating and outfitting people for adventure for more than 70 years.
Edisto River Kayaking The Edisto River is longest free flowing black water river on North American continent. It begins its journey in North Western South Carolina and boasts over one hundred and seventy-five miles of contiguous navigable water on its journey to Atlantic Ocean. Edisto is also 'E' in ACE Basin which is largest protected fresh water river basin in existence and a world model of cooperation in conservation. Most intimate and unvisited portions of this river are cypress tupelo hard wood bottoms flowing with tannic rich black water twisting and meandering through forest.
This habitat is abundant with wildlife including warblers, finches, hawks, owls, eagles, snowy egrets, great blue herons, white tailed deer, otters, beavers and timid alligators to mention just a few. Our adventure will take place on remote sections of black water wilderness. We will sleep on banks of river serenaded by amphibious orchestra of local choir of frogs complimented by inquisitive call of barred owls. Also, visit eco-chic Edisto River Tree Houses and overnight in primitive luxury high above river bottom, remote and totally off grid. Join this four day three night adventure and unlock hidden mysteries of wild and scenic Edisto River. San Juan Islands Multisport Washington's spectacular San Juan Islands are a nature-lover's paradise. Great snowcapped peaks rise all around as scores of marine mammals and shorebirds bask on craggy shorelines. Whales and dolphins feed and play in protected waters while hikers, cyclists and paddlers enjoy quiet and gentle pace of life that brings travelers back again and again to this oasis in Salish Sea. Look forward to some of islands' most scenic and invigorating hikes featuring panoramic views of surrounding islands and peaks. Bike quiet back-roads of Orcas Island past farms and fields, through old growth forest and soak in amazing 360 degree view from highest peak in San Juans.
Set out in a stable kayak in search of seals, sea lions, whales and more and spend night afield on a secluded island. Then, back on San Juan Island, look forward to more outstanding paddling excursions and day hikes or an unforgettable whale watching tour on one of islands' most environmentally friendly boats and search for resident Orca whales. Learn about island's small family farms and agricultural sustainability in San Juan Islands and enjoy locally sourced, organic meals prepared fresh daily by guides throughout trip. San Juan Islands Multisport adventure offers a bit of best of everything this dream destination has to offer. Superstition Mountains Backpacking This craggy high desert wilderness provides ideal setting for a backpacking expedition like no other. Home to legend of Lost Dutchman's Gold, Superstition Mountains have long been considered one of premiere hiking destinations in southwest. This incredibly rugged desert terrain is highlighted by an abundant display of giant Saguaro cacti, bright yellow lichen and unique flora and fauna. Northbound one-way through-hike will traverse deep narrow chasms exploring eroded rock spires and blocky sheer walled mesas. Between ancient Apache petroglyphs, hidden 19th century gold mines and unmatched desert beauty, this backpacking adventure is guaranteed to be legendary!
